‘In Formation 1: A Shift In Prospects’ is a companion album to Gramsci’s earlier 2022 release ‘The Hinterlands’. It is a collection of electronic ambient instrumental music composed for, and inspired by, the new short film ‘T/HERE’ Made by renowned film maker Richard Bell (U2, Depeche Mode, Nirvana) and featuring the talents of local actors Sara Wiseman, Zachary Te Maari, Jan Meachen, Hayley Lomas and Massey Williams the film features 12 pieces of music across the two albums. Originally conceived as 2 separate films the end result has landed as one complete 30 minute piece.
“In the process of our initial collaboration Richard asked me to compose some new music and dialogue that would weave the Hinterlands songs together. I’ve taken huge inspiration over the years from composers working in the ambient field, most notably Brian Eno who is most closely aligned to the term. While I’ve written a vast body of instrumental music for dance and theatre I’ve never properly released much publicly. In a way, my work as The Impending Adorations is the nearest to that space but it seems fitting this collection be released under the Gramsci moniker given its creation for the film. I have entitled the album ‘In Formation1: A Shift In Prospects’ as it is a body of work I very much intend to add to moving forwards. The freedom to engage in a non verbal expression is vast and a personal geography I have found great solace in.” Paul McLaney
